Irwin Intermediate School

Completed in April 2012, the new Irwin Intermediate School at Fort Bragg opened just in time for the 2012-2013 school year. Construction on the $14.9 million, 112,025-square-foot facility began in 2010 and was managed by the Savannah District. The new school replaces the original Irwin building built in 1962. Located off of Normandy Drive, near Butler and Murray elementary schools, the new Irwin School serves 725 students in grades two through five. Amenities include art, music, and general purpose classrooms, computer labs, a playground, gymnasium, and multipurpose rooms with a stage and kitchen.

CEMS performed electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and communications for the new 117,500 SF Intermediate School to serve 725 students, grades 5 and 6. The new school includes general purpose classrooms, art classroom, music classroom, computer labs, gymnasium, multipurpose room with stage and kitchen, specialists’ rooms, information center, administrative offices, teacher work rooms, and supply/storage rooms. It will incorporate advanced communication systems to support technology program requirements, as well as general communications.

The school also includes utilities, parking, bus loading/unloading area, playground, sports facilities, signage, fencing, landscaping, and security lighting. The facility will be designed in accordance with DoDEA Education Facilities Specifications, AT/FP standards, Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines, National Fire Protection Association Life Safety Code, Standards of Seismic Safety for Federally Owned Buildings, and energy conservation standards.

CEMS completed full HVAC, plumbing, lighting, electrical, communications designs to the latest UFCs, Codes, AT/FP Standards, and other applicable criteria.

The Energy Efficient Design complied with EPACT 2005. Project was rated LEED Silver.
